“Dankzij mijn vrouw ben ik hier”

Afgelopen weekend speelde Alex Michalowski met Olympus tegen De Haagsche. Geen gemakkelijke dag: zowel in de foursome als in de single verloor hij zijn partij. Toch kijkt hij met plezier terug. “Ik heb vooral genoten van de ervaring en de sfeer binnen het team.”

Verhuisd voor de liefde

Zijn komst naar Nederland was geen bewuste keuze, maar vooral een kans voor zijn vrouw. “Dankzij haar ben ik hier. Zij kreeg een mooie aanbieding om bij Philips te gaan werken. Toen zei ik: laten we dit avontuur gewoon aangaan.”
Inmiddels woont Alex al vijf jaar in Nederland, samen met zijn vrouw en hun twee jonge kinderen. “Via hen raken we steeds meer ingeburgerd – met scholen, opvang en natuurlijk de taal.”

Thuis is het een bijzondere mix van talen. “Mijn kinderen groeien op met Nederlands als moedertaal. Mijn vrouw spreekt Frans met ze, ik spreek Pools, en omdat ik in Canada ben geboren en opgegroeid, schakelen we af en toe ook nog over naar het Engels. Het is soms een uitdaging, maar het werkt voor ons.”

Alex werkt zelf in Amsterdam en woont op slechts tien minuten rijden van Olympus. “Ideaal!”

Golf in Nederland versus Amerika

Zijn golfervaring reikt verder dan Nederland. Als student speelde hij college golf in de Verenigde Staten, op level 1-niveau. “Daar gaat het er echt hard aan toe: speel je goed, dan blijf je in het team. Heb je een mindere dag, dan zit je op de bank. Het is heel zwart-wit.”
Toch leverde het hem prachtige ervaringen op. “Ik heb op de mooiste banen van Amerika gespeeld.”

Over golf bij Olympus is hij enthousiast. “De baan is mooi; een goede mix van makkelijke en uitdagende holes. Rond de greens is het over het algemeen vriendelijk, maar er zijn zeker plekken waar je jezelf flink in de problemen kunt brengen.”

Op de vraag of hij dit jaar het clubrecord van Dyon gaat aanvallen, blijft hij bescheiden. “We zullen zien. Hij is een sterke speler, maar ik hoop dat ik hem het lastig kan maken.”

Toekomst bij Olympus

Over zijn toekomst blijft Alex nuchter. “Ik bekijk het van jaar tot jaar. Dit seizoen en volgend seizoen speel ik sowieso nog bij Olympus. Daarna hangt het een beetje af van de loopbaan van mijn vrouw. Zij is Frans en denkt soms aan terugverhuizen. Maar ik probeer haar ervan te overtuigen dat Amsterdam een geweldige plek is om te wonen, te werken en te golfen.”

"Thanks to my wife, I'm here"

Last weekend, Alex Michalowski played for Olympus against De Haagsche. It wasn’t an easy day: he lost both his foursome and singles matches. Still, he looks back with a smile. “I really enjoyed the experience and the team atmosphere.”

Moved for love

His move to the Netherlands wasn’t exactly planned—it was mainly an opportunity for his wife. “I’m here because of her. She got a great offer to work at Philips, and I said: let’s go for this new adventure.”
Alex has now been living in the Netherlands for five years, together with his wife and their two young children. “Through them, we’re becoming more and more integrated—schools, childcare, and of course, the language.”

At home, it’s a unique mix of languages. “Our kids are growing up with Dutch as their native language. My wife speaks French with them, I speak Polish, and since I was born and raised in Canada, we sometimes switch to English as well. It can be a challenge, but it works for us.”

Alex works in Amsterdam and lives just ten minutes from Olympus. “Perfect!”

Golf in the Netherlands vs the U.S.

His golf experience stretches far beyond the Netherlands. As a student, he played college golf in the U.S. at Division 1 level. “It’s very intense over there—if you play well, you stay on the team. If you’re off your game, you’re on the bench. It’s very black and white.”
Still, it brought him some amazing experiences. “I got to play on some of the most beautiful courses in the U.S.”

He’s positive about golf at Olympus. “The course is great—a nice mix of easier and more challenging holes. Around the greens, it’s generally friendly, but there are definitely places where you can get yourself into real trouble.”

When asked whether he plans to challenge Dyon’s club record this year, he stays modest. “We’ll see. He’s a strong player, but I hope I can at least give him a run for his money.”

Looking ahead at Olympus

When it comes to the future, Alex stays down to earth. “I take it year by year. I’ll definitely be at Olympus this season and next. After that, it depends a bit on my wife’s career. She’s French and sometimes thinks about moving back. But I try to convince her that Amsterdam is a great place to live, work, and play golf.”
