‘Golf is a teamsport, focus on that.’

Gisteren speelde Heren I gelijk tegen Broekpolder en werden de eerste wedstrijdpunten in de Hoofdklasse binnengehaald. Een historisch moment voor Olympus. Was dit een verrassing voor de mannen, of had er zelfs meer in gezeten? Justin Kersten blikt terug op een zinderende strijd. "Na de laatste hole was ik helemaal kapot."

Sterk uit de startblokken met de foursomes

Op de Haagse, toch wel een van de mooiste banen van Nederland, begon Heren I voortvarend. In de foursomes werd direct een voorsprong van 5-1 genomen.

“Daar zijn we echt goed in,” vertelt Justin. “Veel meer dan andere teams trekken wij op als een collectief. Bij de tegenstander draait het vaak om het individu, maar wij staan er als team. Door de jaren heen hebben we een hechte band opgebouwd en merk je hoe belangrijk het is dat onze karakters elkaar aanvullen. We gunnen elkaar het beste en steunen elkaar door dik en dun. Je weet dat iedereen die dag alles geeft. Dat kwam er zaterdag uit, en daarom was onze voorsprong geen verrassing.”

Singles aan elkaar gewaagd

“In de singles speelde ik gewoon goed en ben ik tevreden over de uitvoering van mijn wedstrijdplan. Maar ja, soms tref je een tegenstander die simpelweg beter is. Mijn opponent was een jonge, talentvolle speler die me er op basis van pure kwaliteit uitsloeg. Dat is de realiteit van spelen in de Hoofdklasse. Gelukkig wisten Anton en Desmond hun partijen overtuigend te winnen, waardoor we het eerste wedstrijdpunt in de competitie konden vieren.”

“Ik speel nu vier jaar in dit team en het is geweldig om te zien hoe we ons hebben ontwikkeld. We kunnen echt mee in de Hoofdklasse. Wat me verrast, is dat het niveauverschil kleiner is dan ik had verwacht. Waar het ons nog aan ontbreekt: ervaring. Onze tegenstanders spelen al jaren op dit niveau en zijn kind aan huis op de Oude Negen. Daardoor valt het kwartje vaak net hun kant op.”

Tip van Justin

Tot slot vragen we Justin om een advies voor andere NGF-spelers van Olympus. Hij twijfelt geen seconde: “Golf is a teamsport, focus on that. Leer elkaar kennen, waardeer elkaars sterke punten en investeer in die teamspirit. Als je daar energie insteekt, vertaalt  dat zich zonder twijfel naar betere prestaties in de competitie.”

Yesterday, Men’s I drew against Broekpolder, securing their first points in the Hoofdklasse. A historic moment for Olympus. Was this a surprise for the team, or was there even more potential? Justin Kersten looks back on a thrilling battle : "After the final hole, I was completely exhausted."

A strong start with the foursomes

At The Hague, undoubtedly one of the most beautiful courses in the Netherlands, Men’s I started off strong. In the foursomes, they immediately took a 5-1 lead.

“We really excel at this,” says Justin. “More than other teams, we operate as a collective. While the opponents often focus on individual performance, we stand together as a team. Over the years, we have built a strong bond, and you can see how important it is that our personalities complement each other. We genuinely support one another through thick and thin. You trust that everyone is giving their all that day. That showed on Saturday, and that’s why our lead wasn’t a surprise.”

Singles: A hard-fought battle

“In the singles, I played well and I’m satisfied with how I executed my game plan. But sometimes, you just come up against a stronger opponent. My opponent was a young, talented player who simply outplayed me with sheer quality. That’s the reality of competing in the Hoofdklasse. Fortunately, Anton and Desmond convincingly won their matches, allowing us to celebrate our first point in the competition.”

“I’ve been part of this team for four years now, and it’s amazing to see how we’ve grown. We can truly compete at this level. What surprises me is that the gap is smaller than I expected. What we lack is experience. Our opponents have been playing at this level for years and know the ‘Oude Negen’ courses inside out. That often gives them the edge in close matches.”

Justin’s Tip: Strength in Unity

Finally, we ask Justin for some advice for other NGF players from Olympus. He doesn’t hesitate: “Golf is a team sport, focus on that. Get to know each other, appreciate each other’s strengths, and invest in your team spirit. If you put energy into that, it will undoubtedly translate into better performances in the competition.”
